The Burnaby Scottish Country Dance Club offers
a warm welcome to all who would like to experience the joys of Scottish
country dancing:
- Beginner and intermediate/experienced
dancing classes are offered on Monday evenings September through April.
Class hours are 7:30 - 10:00 PM. During the last half hour, both classes
join together for social dancing. Classes are held at Edmonds Community
Centre, 7282 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC.
- Scottish country dancing, also known as
"the ballroom dancing of Scotland", is energetic, enjoyable
and sociable. It is performed in "sets" similar to square
dancing. As a non-competitive recreational activity, it is quite
distinct from Highland Dancing. It is good for the body, the mind, and
the soul.
- No experience is necessary to begin, and
one doesn't need to be Scottish!
- You do not need to bring a partner. For
sociability's sake, dancing with many different partners is encouraged.
- Music consists of reels, jigs and
strathspeys, primarily played by fiddle and accordion bands, but
occasionally played on bagpipes. You can't help but dance when you hear
this music!
- Dress for class should be chosen for
comfort and ease of movement: skirt or dress for ladies, and casual
pants or kilt for men.
- Footwear generally consists of ghillies
or ballet slippers, but any light shoe may be worn to begin with.
- Perhaps you are not sure if Scottish
country dancing is for you? To make it easier for you to decide, your
first two classes comprise a free trial period.

The Burnaby Scottish Country Dance Club (BSCSC)
was formed in 1972. The club has two qualified dancing teachers: Rosemary
Coupe (intermediate/experienced), and Cathrine Conings (beginners). The
BSCDC hosts an annual dance in March. For many years, the Vancouver Fiddle
Orchestra has provided the music for this event. Club members also enjoy
dancing at many Scottish country dance events held throughout the lower
mainland. All members of the BSCDC also belong to the Vancouver Branch of
the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS). The RSCDS is a worldwide
organization that provides essential resources, trains teachers and sets
standards for this dance form.
