Ceilidh Dancing is the more informal version of Scottish Country Dancing. At our monthly gatherings, we offer live music, refreshments and fun - no partner needed, just bring your smiles and wear loose, layered clothing (can be quite energetic) and flat, comfy shoes (no high heels).

Easy dances are all taught from scratch, and we welcome beginners. Come on your own or with a group of friends - even if you have two left feet, come to the class beforehand, and we'll show you how to use the right one!

Learn The Dashing White Sergeant; Eightsome Reel; Strip the Willow and other easy dances. It's good fun, good exercise and not at all difficult. Check it out!

All dances are held at the Scottish Cultural Centre,
8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.

We start with a class at 7 pm, and the dance begins at 8 pm. The whole evening only costs $9 (Students $7). We dance to the music of Calanais, and refreshments of beer, juice, wine and squares are available. Bring your non-dancing friends and have them share in the fun.

Schedule of Upcoming Ceilidh Dances for 2008
all dances on a Friday (except as noted)
September 26

Message from Duncan - April 27

"Thanks everybody who came along to the Ceilidh Dance last Friday. It was a good attendance though I never did make a count of the number of sets but there must have been close to 100 or even more as we had to open the partition. We even had a 10 year old birthday party. As usual there were a number of first timers but many others had been before. It is great how everyone is willing to dance with everyone else. There does not seem to be a scramble to get one group all staying together. Of course the progressive dances help but it is manly the enthusiasm of all you dancers that makes the evening so much fun for me. Then again there are the volunteer helpers who work away assisting the sets that are having trouble etc.

At the end of the 10th season of Ceilidh Dancing I have a lot of people to thank. The band members naturally spring to mind and it would be a dull event without their toe tapping tunes. Cathy, Carole, Cathrine and (C)Kate (the 3 C's and a K) you have all been wonderful and are always ready for anything and generally guess what dance I am teaching long before I remember to tell you!! Then there is Bonnie who helps at the door, fills empty water jugs and is there at the end to help clear everything up and Stuart who comes early to help with the music in the class and then assists at the door and there are the RSCDS dancers headed by the President, Elizabeth, who are all such a big help in the dances and who mix with the novices and encourage them. We all owe these folk a big Thank You and hope they will all be willing and able to come along again on September 26 when the 11th season of Ceilidh Dancing will start.

Now, just because that was the last Ceilidh Dance until September, there is no reason to stop dancing. There is still lots happening between now and September. There is the Youth Weekend West for those of you 30ish and under, our class in the West End Community Centre on Tuesday nights at 7:30 welcomes drop in dancers of all abilities, dancing on Monday nights in Stanley Park starts up on June 9 and there is the Highland Games on June 28 in Coquitlam. You can join the massed demonstration dance at the Games by attending the practices on the Wednesday nights for 3 weeks before the Games. The dances are always fun and basic and it would be great to have a record number of sets (8 to a set) dancing in front of the Grandstand. There is the added incentive of getting entry to the Games at a reduced price if you are part of the demonstration!! Check out all the events below and come along to some of them."
